It’s October and with it comes all of the fun of dressing up for Halloween and preparing your altar for Día de los Muertos. La Santa Cecilia is ready to get us in the spirit with their newest video for “Calaverita,” a Día de los Muertos themed song and video.
Honoring ancestors and friends that have passed can be a somber time, but La Santa Cecilia takes the celebrations of Día de los Muertos to heart and makes it into a time to celebrate life and death. As the song says, “Todititas tus pasiones, quiero celebrar.” The song brings up the things that are typical to put on the altar: the flowers, the food, everything.
I’ll admit that the first time I watched it, I found myself asking, “Where can I buy that awesome t-shirt with La Santa Cecilia as skeletons,” but I digress.
The video follows a girl that sees La Catrina and is given a really awesome pseudo-mariachi jacket with a calavera on the back. (No, seriously! I want most of these outfits.) As she’s shimmying her way down the street, the people around her suffer accidents that lead to their deaths, but don’t fret! They quickly join the party and start shimmying behind her.
No one is safe here including Donald Trump, who is also a victim. La Santa Cecilia isn’t afraid of bringing politics into their music and this is a subtle way of including today’s topics in the video. Major props for this.
Meanwhile, La Santa Cecilia sings from coffins, as they push their way to get the party started aboveground – at the cemetery, no doubt. The music revives everyone because as la Marisoul says, “Los muertos bailan con [su] cancion.”
This is a very cute video with a great message y en serio que te pone a bailar, so make sure to watch it to discover Donald Trump’s fate and the major plot twist in the video. Now go get those altars ready for November 2nd!
